Coming in 2014 – an excerpt of WALLS OF BABYLON

I'm ramping up my release list for 2014 and thought I'd share some of the potential releases.  It's going to be a great year of Medieval Madness,  the kind of romances that kick you in the gut (in a good way) and leave you breathless. This excerpt is from WALLS OF BABYLON, a truly deep and emotional Medieval Romance that is  in the pipeline for release.  Here's the set up:  Sir Kenton de Riveaux is one of the greatest knights in the arsenal of Henry V.  Think of him as a cross between Gaston de Russe and Stephen of Pembury.  He has been charged with the acquisition of Babylon, a castle that holds one of the major gateways into Yorkshire.  Kenton manages to breach the castle only to find the lady of the keep, the Lady Nicola-Aubrey Thorne, and her three young boys.  The lord is missing, and Kenton very much wants to get his hands on Lord Thorne.  This is from the initial meeting inside the castle when Kenton confiscates it and demands to know where Lord Thorne is.  Take a listen:     "Lady Thorne," he rumbled. "I will say this one time only, so listen carefully. I have come a long way and…

Excerpt from THE FALLEN ONE

An excerpt from my not yet released novel, THE FALLEN ONE.  Backstory: the hero is a knight stripped of his knighthood by Edward III for siding with Roger Mortimer. Next to the Dragonblade boys, whom he knows very well, he was the greatest knight in the realm. Now he is surviving incognito as a blacksmith. In this scene, he saw an injustice on the street and hastened to save two women from an accoster. This is an excerpt from the conversation with the heroine, whom he just me...t.  Meet Mathias and Cathina: “What do you suppose he wanted with my sister?” she asked hesitantly. “I have never heard of a man simply walking up to a woman and trying to steal her.”   Mathias shrugged, trying to make light of the situation because it had ended well when it could have ended so tragically. He thought it was perhaps best not to dwell on what could have been before he had intervened.   “Mayhap he wanted someone to come home with him and cook him a meal,” he said, mildly teasing as he skirted the subject. “Or mayhap he simply wanted a wife.”   Cathlina turned to him, rather surprised. “Steal a wife?” she…

The Fallen One is coming!

This is going to be another one of those novels along the lines of DRAGONBLADE, ISLAND OF GLASS, OR THE SAVAGE CURTAIN.  So, so much passion and emotion tied up in this novel.  It's been so much fun to write, feeling what the characters are feeling, putting their lives onto paper. THE FALLEN ONE is about a knight who was 'unofficially' the fourth knight in the Dragonblade group - you had Tate, Ken, and Stephen, and... Mathias.  Whereas Tate, Ken and Stephen sided with Edward III, Mathias was bound by honor to side with Roger Mortimer, and we all know where that ended up.  This novel isn't meant to be part of the Dragonblade trilogy but it will be tied into it.  Imagine Tate or Ken or Stephen if they had been dishonored and stripped of their knighthood... now you have the setting for Mathias. A great, great knight who was on the wrong side of a war. This is really going to be a good one, so stay tuned!!

While Angels Slept is on sale for this weekend’s reading

My recent Labor day sale was a HUGE success, so I've put another novel on sale. WHILE ANGELS SLEPT is a beautiful story about a widow and the Viscount who steals her heart during the anarchy of Stephen and Matilda.  There are so many truly rich characters in this story - the widow's young son, the viscount's crippled young daughter who tries so hard to be normal, and even a gypsy king with a heart of gold.  It's a great, great story; plus, Tevin du Reims, the hero, is related to two other Le Veque heroes - Kieran Hage and Christopher de Lohr.  Check out the family tree! http://www.amazon.com/While-Angels-Slept-ebook/dp/B009X4VDOQ/ref=sr_1_26?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378348540&sr=1-26

What Writers Do

Let me tell you a little something about what writers do... and how they do it. Well, at least how I do it.... I get this question a lot - HOW do you write what you write? How do you do it? Well, that's a very good question. The answer is not as simple - first of all, it's not as easy as you think it might be.  Being a novelist takes a lot of attributes - a fairly advanced grasp of how your language works,  an excellent grasp of what you're writing about, and the ability to put on paper what you're trying to convey.  You're telling a story; you need to paint a picture for the reader's mind so clearly that they feel as if they are there.  They feel it, they see it, they smell it. You want them to FEEL what you're telling them; you want them to feel what your characters are going through. You must do this by using the correct sequence of words that clicks in a reader's brain, so much so that they feel pain or happiness or sorrow or excitement.  If your characters is crying, you can only hope the reader is crying along…
